HERO Gets An Online Makeover

Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization (HERO) began in 1996 as a mandate from the local chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) to address the large amount of wasted health care materials from local hospitals. Support for HERO was provided by the MeritCare Foundation and Dakota Heartland Health System.

Initial recycling efforts focused on collecting, storing and packaging these materials and supplying them for medical missions to use globally. In 1998, HERO was incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) license in 2000. Shortly thereafter, HERO’s focus shifted to include redistribution of durable medical equipment and health care supplies to residents in need. In 2003, HERO expanded its services and to assist with redistribution efforts locally.

LogicStew answered a call for help through FirstLink when HERO needed help converting their website from Drupal to something easier for the staff to manage. When their first site was built, they were hoping to use WordPress. The designer instead chose to use Drupal. Drupal is very powerful, but can be hard to manage for someone without a lot of experience creating HTML. LogicStew met with the HERO team and WordPress was the choice for their new site. A list of wants and needs was put together and LogicStew got to work on getting a basic design together. The site launched in April of 2012!

The staff is extremely happy with the new, easy to manage site. LogicStew was happy to do this work for them pro bono!
